Face your fears, live your dreams

Now and then we find out about people that leave everything behind and jump on a great adventure to pursue their dreams. That makes you judge your own life, stop and ask your self if you are doing the right thing. Should you maybe do the same?

Some people would say those "pursuers" are crazy, lonely birds, or maybe just lucky to have the freedom to do it. I recon almost everybody is able to change their life. Most of the time is just a matter of priorities and more than anything else, guts.

I’m sure, even the bravest and most adventurous souls feel scared before their trip. And by trip I mean travel, change of residence, work, lifestyle... Just a few seconds before jumping on board suddenly this fear hits you and you think "Is it worth it?", "Am I doing the foolest thing?", "What was I thinking?"

But this fear is just a sign that you are just about to cross the line of the limit you marked to yourself. But nothing stops you from raising your limit higher up. And then you´ll be moving comfortable in an area where you never imagined you would be. Sounds easy, but it requires a big effort.

In one way or another everybody raises their limits as you grow up. It is part of the process of maturing. Although some steps are bigger that others.

I’m just about to take one of those big steps. When I took the decision I felt scared, doubtful, weak... and again very scared. But if you look around, you find that there are plenty of people that have gone or are going through the same process. That made me feel accompanied in my trip and gave me strength.

One of those people is Kepa Acero. He has just started an amazing trip on his own that will take him to surf the five best waves in five continents. I’m sure he felt the same way as me before jumping on the plane. What he is doing is inspiring for me.

  2. THANK YOU for your Globe Trekker piece on Madrid. Your style is very "fresh" and joyful and makes me want to jump on a plane and go there!

I think you would like Buenas Aires also and would love to see what your review of BA would be like. My wife, sister and I visited there in 2008 and loved it.

Please keep up the GREAT work you are doing in Travel communications. You are exceptionally talented.

  3. Hi Adela,

I agree with the above post. I caught your Madrid piece last night and was really engaged and inspired. I was in Madrid about nine years ago. My sister was doing a year of college abroad in Burgos and she met me in Madrid and we wandered around for half a day before getting on the train and heading north. We went to Reina Sofia and saw Guernica and that was about it. I see that I missed a lot and realize I need to return.

My experience in the north wasn't terrific. I did go to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim among other things and then to San Sebastian which was beautiful. My spanish wasn't great and, since I didn't have much travel experience at the time (I've had a lot since), I didn't have the guts to head into any of the crowded tapas joints. I found the people up there not really friendly to non-spanish speakers, even if I made an attempt to struggle through. I basically went to a lot of bakeries and pointed at loaves of bread and said, "Uno, por favor." So I lived on bread and water in Northern Spain. I do want to go back again, but this time probably to the south.

I remember you saying in the Madrid episode that you always felt welcomed in the south even though you come from the north. Is it different for southerners who travel to the north? I know that all over the world (U.S. included of course) that there is usually a big difference in the north and south of the country. Of course in the north of Spain you have the added issue of the Catalonian (sp?) language vs. Spanish. Is this possibly a reason why Spainiards from the north are a little less embracing of people from other areas?

Thanks for reading. You are very talented and have a terrifc life ahead of you, in whatever career you choose to pursue. Love to hear from you.
